Straight talk from the Lazy w Ranch.........

Blog EntryNov 29, '08 4:34 PM
for everyone

OK...I took some photos while I was stitching Feistykat's covers, so lets see if this makes any sense to you after I write this!

The cover in this tutorial is for a 8 inch set of q-snaps.

Supplies needed are:

cotton fabric - 33 x 7 inches

elastic - 2 pieces of 1/4 inch elastic cut to 17 inches each

thread, safety pin, scissors, iron, sewing machine, 5 minutes

First I cut the fabric into a 33 x 7 inch piece. Then pressed under 1/4 inch seam allowance on each long edge. I then folded this over again, making a 3/4 inch pocket on each side and pressed again.

Next sew a pocket onto each side of the fabric

Next cut two pieces of elastic, each 17 inches long and attach a safety pin to one end.

Thread the safety pin through the pocket.....

and attach elastic to end of pocket by sewing in place...

after threading remainder of elastic through pocket,  secure elastic at opposite end.

Thread elastic through other  pocket and secure both ends

Now join both ends together to form the cover and sew together

I zig zagged the ends after sewing them together so it doesn't fray if you need to wash your cover

The finished cover:

OK....lets see if this makes any sense to you!!!

And...if anyone wants a cover and doesn't have a sewing machine, or the time to make it....I'll make them for starting at just $5 each, and mail them off to you!
I also have my own website with information and fabric choices on it:
Just send me a message or e-mail me at forevercowgirl@hughes.net  and we'll work out the details!

Nordic Needle has them at OUTRAGOUS prices!! Yikes! Like almost $20 for the big one!!
cowgirlfromhanna wrote on Nov 29, '08
WOWOWOW...I was thinking that $5 was too much...LOL
rifestitch wrote on Nov 29, '08
Heck, no, $5 isn't too much! I love that fabric you used in your demo, btw! I have 11 glorious days off at Christmas - me & my sewing machine just might get better acquainted :) I use my 8" ones for my travel pieces, probably ought to whip up a set or two of these myself...

wow I am amazed at the things we learn from each other. I'll have to try to make one now. I have a qsnap dont seem to use it I'm paticular to my scroll frames. But I may just have to get it out and use it just so I can have a reason to play with them.

Thank you so much for doing this!! I just finished making two of them. One for my 8", and one for my 11" q-snaps. It was so easy!!

YEA! they are easy aren't they!! I can't believe I lived without them before Peapod gave me my first one a few weeks ago!

Great tutorial! And I love the choices of fabric. I really like the peacock looking one in the middle.

Great tutorial. I'll have to find myself some pretty fabric (that shouldn't be hard at all! LOL) and make myself in some assorted sizes, since I "mix and match" my Q's all the time to make the size I need...

My first attempt at making one was a huge success!! Can't wait to make a lot more of these!! Thank you!!

Question: how did you arrive at 33" for the 8" Qs? I have other sizes that I would like to make these for, and am curious as to what ratio you used. 4x8" = 32 plus an inch for the seam - is it that simple? And the elastic lengths - half the outside dimension, plus 1" for the seam?
cowgirlfromhanna wrote on Dec 19, '08
yes...thats exactly how I arrived at it Karen.....I was just guessing on the first few that I tried and this formula seemed to work fine! I figured an extra inch for the seam allowances and snipping etc etc
rifestitch wrote on Dec 19, '08
I can handle that!
raelou75 wrote on Mar 12, '09
What a wonderful tutorial. Thanks
tobbiecadhit wrote on Mar 12, '09
So sorry. I haven't tried using Q snaps. Is it meant to protect the cloth during stitching? I use a scroll most of the time. And if i can help it I use gloves. Is it much better to use Q snaps?
cowgirlfromhanna wrote on Mar 12, '09
I love q-snaps Tobbie! yes..I sure do..I could never go back to a hoop again.....yes..the covers protect the fabrics edges and you can tuck your excess fabric up inside it!!!
tobbiecadhit wrote on Mar 13, '09
That sounds cool. : )

That looks neat. I do not use a cover for the Q Snap--I package mine in a zippered cover that I thinks once held a croquet set. It has lots of pockets and loops inside--works good.I have a question--my first quilt on my Q Snap is coming along--except I can't figure how to finish off the edges--how do I quilt that last 6 inches or so that is under the clips? I doot have any instructions that solve this mystery. Donna M., dleewilfong@gmail.com

Hiya, I know this was posted a while ago, but I just came across your tutorial. I'm so pleased that I've been able to make a q-snap cover for myself following your lovely clear instructions particularly as I have limited sewing skills to say the least, lol. Thanks so much! :D

How do you determine the length needed? I want to make myself one for an 11 X 17 q-snap cover and did not know how you determined sizing. Also need length for the elastic.
